The ANML Lightning wrestling team competed in the quarter-finals of the Section 6-2A tournament Thursday, Feb.13 at Annandale High School. The Lightning faced Zimmerman and defeated them 58-14.

The next night, Friday, Feb. 14 the Lightning headed to Zimmerman High School for the semi-finals and finals. The faced the DC-Litch and lost 21-41.

“When all was said and done the Lightning wrestled very well in both matches,” said Head Coach Ben Youngs.

“Hopefully it is an indication as to what’s to come this week during the Section 6-2A Individual Tournament.”

“Our message was one reiterated by my cousin Caleb Truax, a professional boxer, who came to talk to the team on Tuesday night at practice,” Youngs said.

“Don’t get trapped thinking you are the favorite, don’t overlook anyone. Truax told the team.

“The Lightning wrestlers responded well, giving an excellent effort and leaving no doubt who was the No 3 seed and who was the No. 6 seed,” Youngs said.

The Lightning won 10 of 14 matches and 8 of the 10 wins were by pin.

“That really created a gap in the score,” Youngs said.

According to Youngs, the four wrestlers for Zimmerman who won are all in consideration as the top seeds at sections. Their wins were two decisions and two majors.

“Last year in the quarterfinal, we gave up several pins, this year we gave up zero,” Youngs said. “Hats off to Koss, Bunde, Schmidt, and Arnold. They made their best kids earn their points.”
