Brute’s Bleat by Harold Brutlag

Tuesday morning there was a contingent of anglers about to launch their boats on Maple Lake. Most looked like senior citizen which prompted me to ask why Maple! One of the younger anglers said they fish a different lake every Tuesday as their weekly group outing. There were about 12 different boat in the parking lot. Last week they fished Rush Lake, near Pine City, and killed the crappies, he said.     .     .    Mike Muller took me to his hot spot for sunfish Thursday, commenting he and his buddy from South Haven had caught their limits of 20 large sunfish in the matter of a couple of hours the day before. I wasn’t excited to hear I had to get up by 4:30 a.m., pick Mike up by 5:00 a.m., but the thought of having a banner day made the early hour more palatable. Mike was the guide for the day, and although he meant well, the fish didn’t cooperate. Most of the fish we caught were too small to keep and after several hours we had only three in the livewell. Mike caught several bass, the largest about 2-3 lbs. on his ultra-lite outfit which was exciting for him.
