January
On Wednesday Jan. 1, Wright County was to join the 500-some other states, counties, and cities in the nation to pass the Tobacco 21 law (T21) which would raise the legal age to purchase tobacco and e-cigarettes from 18 years of age to 21, but the federal government beat them to the punch line. On Dec. 20, the President signed legislation to amend the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, and raise the federal minimum age of sale of tobacco products from 18 to 21 years. . . For 35 years Peggy Janiak has helped to feed the students at Maple Lake schools, and last week they gave her a retirement send-off she won’t soon forget. When she walked through the cafeteria doors for her final day as Maple Lake High School’s Head Cook, she was greeted by a farewell banner hanging on the wall that was decorated with students’ signatures. The banner read “farewell Peggy. Thank you for the 35 years of service. We will miss you!” “I never expected that,” Janiak said. “The kids really showed their appreciation, and they are all such good-mannered kids.”. .
