Dreaming of a state title

By Brenda Erdahl

Ever since winning the state title in 2018, the Irish softball team has wanted to get back to Mankato, and they did just that last week after three intense games in the heat against a scrappy No. 2 seeded Rockford team.

The Irish played the last three games of the Section 5AA Tournament in Rockford Tuesday, June 8 and Thursday, June 10 under a hot sun in 90 plus degree weather. The Irish held on for an 8-4 win that first game against the Rockets in the semi-finals knowing full well they might meet again at the championship. Sure enough, Rockford battled back and defeated No. 5 seed Glencoe-Silver Lake to the face the Irish again in the final round. Now double elimination, the Rockets would have to beat the Irish twice to claim the Section 5AA Title and advance to State.
