On Thursday, June 3, the Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted/Maple Lake boys golf team attended the two-day Section 5AA meet at Pebble Creek Golf Club in Becker. The boys shot well despite temperatures in the mid 90s. Carson Woolhouse produced a personal record of 97; Luke Raymond shot a personal best 98; Brayden Fobbe shot a 95; Sam Lueck a 102; Larson Melgaard shot a personal record 86 and Sean Zangs shot a 90.

Melgaard’s 86 qualified him for day-two of the tournament. An eighth grader from Maple Lake, Melgaard is the youngest golfer ever and only the second golfer in nine years to qualify for Day 2 from Maple Lake.

Although he didn’t qualify for state, Melgaard’s performance bodes well for his future in golf.

“He can keep his head high knowing he made is team and town proud,” Jeani Melgaard said.

Coach Jeff Goudy and Chad Elston commented how proud they were of their team this year and are looking forward to seeing the team grow in the years to come.
