By Brenda Erdahl:
The minute Amber Davis stepped out onto the stage at the Miss Teen Minnesota USA pageant 13 some years ago, she knew she wasn’t the same kind of girl as the rest of the competitors. She didn’t look like the other girls, and she didn’t come from the same background.
Not only did she lack the stereotypical pageant body type, she was a junkyard farm girl from rural Maple Lake who struggled with the concept of hairspray. Yet there she stood, Cinderella at the ball without an iota of fairy godmother magic.
“I loved the contrast,” she said. “I thought, I don’t look like the other girls, but I’m still here.”
It was at that moment, Davis, who now goes by the professional name Ember, realized she wanted to do more of this. More of what exactly? Representing girls like her who don’t fit the mold, who need only to break down societal barriers to be the person they were meant to be, namely, their natural self.
Ember (Amber Davis) is breaking barriers as a welder by night and actress/model by day. Her most recent accomplishment is winning Miss Voluptuous Minnesota. Above, she appears in a parade riding a motorcycle in crown and sash.
