Brute’s Bleat

Field work had started north of Hwy. 10 and west of Hasty last Thursday when I had  to make a trip to St. Cloud. On the way back there was one field of potatoes planted south of Hasty off County Road 8 and another corn stubble field was being worked. That area has the advantage of lighter soil than around Maple Lake. There was 1 1/4 inches of rain in my backyard gauge over the weekend which will hold up tilling and planting by local farmers, but they’ll be out in force with the warm weather on tap.
Northern Minnesota anglers may have to postpone the fishing opener (May 14) according to the reports of ice still on many of northern Minnesota lakes. No problem fishing around here and it’s still nine days away.
I noticed the swans that have been building a nest each year on the puddle west of Varner Lake (off Hwy. 55) are back and busy. Their choice for a nest must work for them, but to me it seemed too low to the water and risked the chance of being drowned out.
