The Maple Lake Lions Club has a long history of providing scholarships to Maple Lake students. This year was no exception as the Lions awarded four $1,000 and one $1,500 scholarships to members of the Class of 2022. Awarding the scholarships was the easy part. Choosing the five recipients from the group of seniors who completed the Lions’ scholarship application was more difficult. Of the 83 graduating seniors, 52 completed one or more general scholarship applications and nearly 1/3 chose to complete the Lions’ application. Selecting five scholars from a field of 27 was no easy task.
Five Lions, three men and two women, evaluated the applications, discussed the merits of each and came to a consensus. Each application was identified by a number and contained no identifying information; applicants were reviewed anonymously. Students were asked to provide information about school participation, work experience, goals and “Who do you look up to and why?” and one more category, community service.
