Out of this world

Maple Lake Elementary wrapped up another successful I Love to Read Month Feb. 28 that featured dress-up days, prizes and the finale, Cosmic Bowling.

This year’s theme was Journey to Reading/ Out of this World and the month-long highlight was the large group room organizers decorated to look and feel like a real planetarium.

“We covered every single wall in the large group room with space paper, darkened all the windows and had projectors projecting the solar system on the ceiling,” Media Specialist Sarah Thomas said. Throughout the Month of February students had the chance to read under the stars on cushy beanbag chairs with their flashlights. Everyone was sad at the end of the month when it had to be taken down, she said.

This year’s reading challenge was “One School, One Book.” The school purchased 300 some copies of “Ranger in Time” and gave every student a copy to read throughout the month at home. The goal was to read a chapter a day, Thomas said. To make it more interesting and exciting, students were asked to answer a trivia question every day that was read over the announcements. Answers were submitted in a drop box at the library and every day names were drawn, and prizes given away.
