Contributed report
Wright County property owners recently received their annual Notice of Valuation and Classification for the 2023 Assessment, property taxes payable in 2024. According to the Wright County Assessor’s Office, this is the first of three notifications that property owners will receive regarding the 2024 property taxes, with the Truth in Taxation notice coming in November 2023 and the Property Tax Statement in March 2024. The purpose of the Valuation Notice is to notify property owners of their 2023 property valuation and classification for property taxes. Other information on the notice includes enrollment in state programs such as homestead, green acres and disabled vets as well as any new construction value included in the total valuation. The Assessor’s Office encourages property owners to review their notifications and contact the Assessor’s Office if they have questions or concerns, most of the time things can be resolved informally at this level.
For property owners who wish to formally appeal their value or classification, their appeal options depend on the district in which the property is located.
Open Book Districts: Wright County has 13 districts that are utilizing the Open Book option of appeals for 2023. They include the cities of Buffalo, Clearwater, Cokato, Delano, Maple Lake, Monticello, Montrose, South Haven and Waverly and the townships of Chatham, Clearwater, Rockford and Silver Creek. Property owners in open book districts have the ability to informally appeal by contacting the Assessor’s Office through the beginning of June. The Assessor’s Office will be hosting an “open book” meeting from 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday, April 27 at the Wright County Government Center (3650 Braddock Ave. NE, Buffalo) in Conference Room 1103. Attendance at this meeting is not required, rather this is an opportunity for the Assessor’s Office to be available to property owners outside of normal business hours. According to the Assessor’s Office, property owners who are unsatisfied with their appeal at this level, are welcome to sign up for the County Board of Appeal and Equalization which will be held on Monday, June 12, at the Wright County Government Center.
