The Irish baseball team started out strong with two wins early last week against Holdingford and Glencoe-Silver Lake then experienced a run of bad luck dropping a pair of doubleheaders.
Maple Lake 7, G-SL 6
After Monday’s win over Holdingford (see last week’s Messenger) the Irish won again on Tuesday, May 2, when the team edged Glencoe-Silver Lake 7-6.
The Irish struck first with a run in the bottom of the second. The Panthers pulled ahead with three runs in the top of the third and it continued to be a back-and-forth battle the rest of the game.
Eddy Neu finished with three hits, one run and two RBI. Noah Gindele had a big game with three hits, three runs and one RBI. Danny Reilley also had an RBI. He was 1 for 1 at the plate.
Jarrett Faue threw 5.2 innings, gave up six hits, six runs, had four walks and seven strikeouts.
Maple Lake 6, Paynesville 12
What started as a one-run lead in the top of the second inning quickly escalated for the Bulldogs. Paynesville’s big inning came early when they scored four runs in the bottom of the first.
Maple Lake’s big inning was the top of the second when they cut the Bulldog lead to one with three runs.
Four Irish had RBIs in the game, and several had multiple hits. Nathan Zander and Gindele both had three hits.
Gindele pitched four innings. He gave up eight hits, nine runs, threw two walks and two strikeouts.
