Maple Lake’s Lakers got off to a great start Sunday when they defeated Union Hill 12-8 in eleven innings. Their next game is Sunday Aug. 27 at 11 a.m. with the Courtland Cubs. Site was not available by press time Monday.
In Sunday’s game Maple Lake got on the scoreboard in the first inning when Ben Clapp scored on a hit by Malacheck. One run added in the second inning. They added three more in the fourth inning and one in the sixth on Malacheck’s home run to give pitcher Hunter Malacheck a comfortable 8 run lead. Union Hill got on the board with four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take away some of that comfort and tied the game at 8-8 in their half of the eighth inning. Neither team scored in the ninth or the 10th innings, but the Lakers came alive in the eleventh scoring four runs, one a steal by Grant Mergen, when he took advantage of the Union Hill catcher’s lob throw back to their pitcher. Maple Lake’s drafted pitcher, Jordan Flick, from the D-C team set the Cubs down in order for the win.
Line score:
Maple Lake 2 2 0 3 0 1 0 0 0 0 4 12 16 h 1 error
Union Hill 0 0 0 0 0 4 0 4 0 0 0 8 15 h 4 errors

I didn’t get to the Laker game Sunday because of some mobility issues, but enjoyed the game via the Buffalo radio station. I’ll probably do the same thing next Sunday when they play the Region 2A Courtland Cubs who were seeded the first weekend and didn’t play. I suspect it will be another tough game, but at state they most always are.
