It was nice to be greeted by sunshine Monday morning with predictions of 40 degrees and warmer after a week of foggy mornings, 30 degree temps with hardly any sunshine. Those in the know said the fog was the result of snow in Iowa which put too much moisture in the air as it melted. I’m guessing this is our January thaw which has melted most if not all of the snow in Wright County. We’re not out of the woods yet, and we can expect a couple of snow storms before spring, but this is nice while it lasts!

The local geese, which spend the winter on the Mississippi, were feeding in two fields off County Road 25 near Monticello last week. I’d estimate their numbers to be near 750 in the two spots. There was lots of fishing activity on the east end of Maple Lake with the parking lot filled and vehicles parked on the north side of Hwy. 37 Saturday morning. Both ends of the lake were busy Sunday with some vehicles on the ice off Hwy. 55. Buffalo Lake was also busy with anglers and ice skaters.

The Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers won their way into the Feb. 11, 5:30 p.m. Super Bowl at Las Vegas. The Chiefs won over the Baltimore Ravens 17-10 and the 49ers defeated Detroit Lions Sunday afternoon. I hadn’t picked either one two win, but of the two games, the Lions vs. 49ers was the most exciting. The Lions led at half time 24-17 when they outplayed the 49ers in the first half.
The big play in the third quarter was when Brandon Aiyuk delivered an improbable catch that helped save San Francisco’s season. Purdy’s 51-yard pass that deflected off a defender’s face mask into Aiyuk’s hands helped the Niners rally from 17 points down at halftime to beat the Detroit Lions 34-31.
KC is the favorite in the Super Bowl.
