Another four day holiday is over, that’s if your employer gave you Friday off and I can’t remember when that happened. Not while I was the publisher! But times have changed since then. We had some showers this year which affected some fireworks, but for the most part they were carried out as scheduled. There didn’t seem to be as many this year, but that may be because my hearing isn’t as good as it was four years ago!

I noticed lots of the small grain, winter wheat, oats and barley, is starting to change color or ripen. With all of the rain we’ve had, there should be lots of straw. When I was growing up each farm had a straw stack which the dairy and hog farmers used primarily for bedding. Now days most of it is baled. It’s often been said once that once the 4th of July is over, so is most of the summer.

The Sunday news reported that Minnesota Congresswoman Angie Craig is the fifth and the latest House Democrat to call for President Joe Biden to step out of the 2024 presidential race after his dismal showing in the debate with former President Donald Trump. This is going to be an unusual campaign whether Biden steps down or chooses to fight. He has an Irish heritage and as the saying goes about nationalities, “You can tell he’s an Irishman, but you can’t tell him much!” I suspect when congress goes back into session, there will be lots of back-room talking about what to do with him because of his age and health. In his letter to fellow Democrats he opened with this paragraph, “July 8, 2024 – Fellow Democrats,
Now that you have returned from the July 4th recess, I want you to know that despite all the speculation in the press and elsewhere, I am firmly committed to staying in this race, to running this race to the end, and to beating Donald Trump.
