Scamper fights with weather

By Brenda Erdahl

Extreme weather made the 2025 Irish Scamper one to remember.

Some 121 runners finished the 5K out of the 152 that registered Saturday, March 15. This annual race has been part of Maple Lake’s St. Patrick’s Day festivities for years and has seen some sketchy weather, but this one was one for the books, organizer Ben Youngs said.

Temperatures that were above 70 degrees the day before, dropped by the minute on Saturday so it was about 30 degrees with a strong wind at race time.

The change was so extreme that the runners’ first lap of the 5K was noticeably colder than the first and included snow showers.

Runners erupt from the starting line of the Irish Scamper, Saturday. By their second lap, temperatures had dropped noticeably, and the snow started to fall.
