Three Lightning wrestlers walked into the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul and two walked out with state medals after getting their hand raised one final time this season, and, for one of these individuals, the last time in his Lightning high school career.
Sophomore Abby Gindele (Girls 118) and senior Nathan Klatt (215) each finished their seasons with wins in the third-place matches of their respective weight classes and stood on the podium following action from the Minnesota Individual State Wrestling Tournament, Feb. 28-March 1. Sophomore Cassen Brumm (121) also represented the Lightning at state, but didn’t place.
As for Klatt, seeded fourth at his weight class, he began his state tournament run with a tight battle versus Chisago Lakes’ Connor Frederixon. Tied 2-2 midway through the final period, Klatt scored a takedown with 59 seconds left and rode out Frederixon for the 5-2 win.
