New food shelf celebrated with grand opening events

A new food shelf building is already making a positive impact on the ability of the Annandale Area Food Shelf to serve those in need. The new facility on the eastern end of Annandale at 390 Annandale Blvd. opened to clients on July 13 and was celebrated last week with grand opening events. The food shelf in Annandale, which also serves people from the Maple Lake and South Haven areas, was founded in 1983 in Annandale’s old city hall. When a new city hall was built in 2000, the food shelf was moved to a building at 99 Cherry Avenue. After expanding into additional space in that building, space for the food shelf was finally maxed out at 1,400 square feet and a decision was made last year to build a new facility. At a cost of about $250,000, a big step on the road to the new building occurred when the Morgan Family Foundation provided a grant of $150,000. And other major donations followed.
