Hockey player is Division 1 material

A grandparent’s pride in their grandchildren is unnegotiable whether justified or not. In the case of Maxine Gohman’s grandson Jake Schneider, it’s well deserved.

Schneider, 21, is the oldest grandson of Dave and Maxine Gohman of Maple Lake and oldest son of Lisa Gohman Schneider of Plymouth. This fall he’ll begin his second season with the Colgate Raiders Division 1 Hockey team where he has been dubbed, the “Minnesota Missile.”

Colgate University in Hamilton, New York is where the Raiders and now Schneider call home. They are part of the East Coast Athletic Conference along with 11 other colleges and universities including Ivy Leaguers like Cornell, Dartmouth, Harvard, Princeton and Yale.

One of only four freshmen, Schneider racked up the commendations his rookie year. He tallied his first multi-point night in a 4-2 victory over Cornell with one goal and two assists to earn the title of East Coach Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week. By the end of the season, he scored eight goals and nine assists, good enough to be named to the East Coast Athletic Conference Men’s Hockey All-Rookie Team.

Schneider comes from a long line of overachievers. Maxine is a former Maple Lake Messenger reporter who went on to earn a degree in interpersonal communications and a master’s degree in psychology counseling. Dave was a beloved science teacher and wrestling coach at Maple Lake High School in the 1970s and Schneider’s mother Lisa may be best remembered by locals as the 1988 Miss Maple Lake and 1989 Minneapolis Aquatennial Princess.
