When Carter Ertel and Olivia Mueller teamed up as duo interpretation partners last year on the Maple Lake speech team, they had vague thoughts that state could be in their future – maybe by their junior or senior year.
The Irish sophomores knew they were a good match, a dream team of sorts and a CMC championship and fourth place finish at sub-sections only gave certainty to that feeling. They were cautiously confident going into the Section 5A competition on April 12th in Annandale, but when it came time for the awards ceremony and the announcer began the backward count down, they never imagined they’d be one of the qualifying three, much less runner-up.
