Fighting to reduce truancy

Last week, Wright County Court Services, along with the county attorney’s office and the 10th Judicial District hosted a monthly meeting with students, parents and guardians dealing with truancy. At this meeting, they also had a special guest – Minnesota Supreme Court Justice Anne McKeig, who attended the meeting, met with county staff and toured the Wright County Justice Center. Wright County Court Services first got involved in truancy cases for students age 12 and older during the 2022-23 school year because truancy had become much more pervasive for students in the post-COVID era that changed how education was delivered.
Over the last three years, Wright County Court Services has conducted monthly attendance intervention meetings to bring students and parents together to find the root causes of students being truant. These meetings include the county attorney’s office and judges from the 10th Judicial District to illustrate the consequences of prolonged truancy and areas of support. Each month, approximately 50 students are deemed truancy risks.
